4. FEEDINGSTUFFS AND WATER

THIRD EDITION

4.1 Feed

MUST CRITERIA

  • All dairy cattle must be fed in accordance with a documented feed plan that is available for inspection and updated each time the diets are changed or, if no changes, reviewed at least twice a year.

UKASTA Feed Assurance Scheme

  • Farmers must ensure all compounds, blends and straights are purchased from accredited suppliers of the UKASTA Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS).

  • Farmers must ensure that all other feeds including roots, forages, human food waste products and farm to farm transactions are purchased in accordance with the NDFAS warranty letter.

  • Farmers must keep feed delivery documents for all purchased feeds.

  • Where home mixing, producers must comply with UK and EU legislation for registration and maintain suitable records.

  • Farmers must ensure all dry feeds are handled and stored in accordance with DEFRA Codes of Practice.

  • Farmers must ensure all forages and bulk moist feeds are handled and stored in accordance with DEFRA Codes of Practice.

 

SHOULD CRITERIA

  • Farmers should ensure that dairy cattle have sufficient access to feeding trough space taking into account the weight and size of the animal and feeding system used.


 

4.2 Water

MUST CRITERIA

  • All cattle must have free access to a continual supply of fresh, clean drinking water.

  • All cattle must be provided with additional water troughs whilst at pasture or outdoors unless there are sufficient natural water sources to ensure adequate daily access.

  • All cattle must have adequate in-house water troughs that are suitably sited.

  • All practical steps must be taken to minimise water trough fouling.


 

4.3 Calf Nutrition

MUST CRITERIA

(A calf is defined as a bovine animal less than six months of age.)

  • Calves must be fed at least twice a day on a wholesome diet appropriate to their age and weight.

  • Calves must, in hot weather or when ill, have fresh drinking water available at all times.
